Right to Life commends nurses employed by the Auckland District Health Board refusing to assist in 2nd trimester abortions. We encourage more nurses to follow their conscience and refuse to assist in abortions. In doing so they would be upholding the hallowed traditions of their noble profession to defend life and to uphold the sanctity of life of every human being from conception to natural death.
Right to Life deplores President Barack Obama’s signing of an executive order rescinding the Mexico City Policy that prohibited Federal funding of overseas organisations that promote the killing of unborn children. President Obama is the most pro – abortion President in the history of the United States. The order allows government funding of the United Nations Population Fund [UNFPA] and the International Planned Parenthood Federation, [IPPF].
Right to Life challenges the outrageous claim of the New Zealand Family Planning Association, [NZFPA] made in its press release of 27 January. The Association claims that “the ending of this policy will help save the lives of millions of women…” We challenge the Association to provide the evidence to support this claim. The funding will in fact result in the killing of millions of defenceless and innocent unborn children. It will also result in many women suffering as a result of their abortion a lifetime of regret and physical and psychological damage.
It is deplorable that President Obama has signed an executive order directing that funding of $34 US million be given to the United Nations Population Fund to promote abortion in other countries. This Agency supports and is complicit in China’s notorious one child family policy with forced abortions. It is now expected that the United States will aggressively promote abortion in the United States and overseas.
Further to our correspondence of the 29 March and 19 May 2007 we wish to draw your attention to the following. Our Society has recently conducted research into the issue of women considering an abortion being offered the opportunity of viewing an ultrasound scan of their child before signing a consent form for an abortion. The following District Health Boards [DHBs] advised that women considering an abortion were offered the opportunity of viewing a scan. The DHBs were Otago, Hawkes Bay and Taranaki. The following DHB’s advised that women were not offered the opportunity to view their ultrasound scan unless they specifically asked for it; they were Auckland, Waikato, Wairarapa and Canterbury.
Dear Mr Key
Re New Year Honours
Our Society wishes to express its displeasure and opposition to the appointment in the New Year honours of Dr Lillian Claire Rothwell as Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Dr Rothwell was appointed by Parliament on 30 August 2001 as the chairperson of the Abortion Supervisory Committee; she resigned that office on 1 March 2007. It is noted that Justice Miller in his judgment presented in June 2008 on the Judicial Review of the performance of the Abortion Supervisory Committee stated;
Re Official Information Act – Request

We note that the Committee has a statutory duty under the Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion Act 1977, section 14. Functions and Powers of Supervisory committee, [g], To obtain, monitor, analyse, collate, and disseminate information relating to the performance of abortions in New Zealand.
Dear Mr Power
Re Abortion Supervisory Committee Report 2008
Our Society is concerned at the withholding of important statistical information by the Abortion Supervisory Committee [ASC] in its report to Parliament for 2008. The Committee has a statutory duty under the Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion Act 1977, section 14. Functions and Powers of Supervisory committee, [g], To obtain, monitor, analyse, collate, and disseminate information relating to the performance of abortions in New Zealand.
The Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology, [ACART] has recommended that Ministerial authority be given for the use of human embryos for scientific research.
Right to Life New Zealand in the defence of life is totally opposed to the recommendation as being immoral and a violation of human rights. It is also an appalling exploitation of women who would be asked to give up their children for research and destruction..
Right to Life New Zealand is opposed to the recommendation made to the Minister of Health, by the Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology, [ACART] that permission be granted for the use of human embryos for embryonic stem cell research in New Zealand.
