Why is Nicola Willis not truly pro-life?

Nicola Willis, M.P., by adopting an anti-life stance is jeopardising a potentially brilliant political career.

 If Nicola Willis is unwilling to protect the unborn child, the weakest and most defenceless member of the human family and the terminally ill, why then should we trust her to protect our lives?

 Right to Life believes that Nicola Willis, Deputy Leader of the National Party who aspires to govern us, has because of her anti-life commitment forfeited her right to sit in our Parliament or to seek to govern us.

Those who govern us do so with the permission of the governed. The first duty of those who govern us is to protect the lives of every member of the community from conception to natural death, especially the weakest and most defenceless.

Nicola Willis has violated this requirement to protect our lives by supporting the murder of the unborn up to birth by voting for the anti-life and anti-feminist Abortion Legislation Act, 2020. She also voted against eight amendments that would have provided more protection for the lives of the unborn and protection for mothers.

In 2019 she voted for the End of Life Choice Act that allows doctors to kill their patients with a lethal injection or assist in their suicide.

Nicola Willis M.P.,  who professes to be Christian, has had the privilege of an elite Christian education at the Samuel Marsden Anglican Collegiate in Karori, Wellington. As a Christian, she will be familiar with the Ten Commandments of God which are written in the hearts of mankind. Right to Life is therefore disappointed that she does not accept that the Fifth commandment of God, Thou shalt not kill, prohibits killing children in the womb and the killing of the terminally ill.

Nicola Willis believes that every woman has the right to kill their children before they are born. On 3rd March 2020 in her address to Parliament at the first reading of the Abortion Legislation Bill she stated, “I will not stand by while they question women’s rights to have autonomy over our own bodies”.

Right to Life asks why she does not accept the right of unborn children who are actually in control of the pregnancy, to be respected and protected while they reside temporarily in their mother’s womb.

We need to show that we can create a world where we can love children and not kill them. A world where adoption is always a better option, a world where we care for women and their children. This is our opportunity to make the grisly performance of abortion like slavery, unthinkable in a civilised modern society.

Right to Life encourages Nicola Willis, who is a loving mother of four beautiful children, to become truly pro-life and to be at the forefront in Parliament in protecting unborn children and their precious mothers by supporting legislation that recognises the unborn child from conception as a human being endowed by its Creator with an inalienable right to life.

State kills 146 vulnerable patients under new law

The End of Life Choice Act 2019 allows doctors to kill their patients with a lethal injection or to assist in their suicide. This legislation allows doctors to avoid being charged with homicide.

 The first annual report on the number of vulnerable patients that have been killed with the permission of the government reveals that 146 patients were killed by doctors who were generously paid by the state for their services.

 The report was presented to the Minister of Health, Andrew Little, by the Registrar of Assisted Dying, Dr Kristin Good. The report covers the period from 7th November 2021 to the 31st March 2022. The MOH’s website Assisted Dying Service Data and Reporting section provides further information.

The government of Jacinda Ardern has authorised and funded the killing of these patients whose lives were considered not worthy of living. These patients were killed with a lethal injection or assisted in their suicide by a doctor employed by the State. The government has a special unit in the Ministry of Health with seven full time staff to oversee and promote euthanasia. There is no unit to promote palliative care which is substantially underfunded.

ACT’s Deputy Leader and Health spokesperson Brooke van Velden was pleased with the report and said, “I’m proud of the work ACT and David Seymour did to champion the End of Life Choice Act through parliament and through a nationwide referendum. “

The government pays doctors up to $3000 for each patient they give a lethal injection to or assist in suicide. Treasury would confirm that it is cheaper to kill patients than to provide palliative care for them.

The government promotes euthanasia, which is fully funded as giving patients a right to choose. This so-called ‘right’ will ultimately become a duty to die, when we become a burden on the state.

Right to Life believes that the End of Life Choice Act actually empowers doctors to kill their patients, violates their medical ethics and avoids their prosecution for murder. Doctors who wish to be trained serial killers become the most dangerous people in the land.

This annual report should fill us with terror and apprehension as we consider living in a state where the government  is prepared to decide who should live and who shall be killed, all under the guise of a health service. When the government assumes the right to decide whose lives are of value and who may be killed, we are then living in a tyrannical state, which is prepared to violate medical ethics in order to force medical practitioners to become state executioners.

The report reveals:-

  • 101 people were still in the process of assessment or preparation for assisted dying
  • 153 people did not continue the process (due to being ineligible, withdrawing or dying)
  • 146 people had an assisted death.

As of 31 March 2022:

  • 78.6% of people that apply for assisted dying are NZ European/Pakeha
  • 55.3% are women
  • 74.3% are aged 65 years or older
  • 64.6% have a cancer diagnosis

The locations where euthanasia or assisted dying was carried out were as follows:

  • 113 (or 79.0%) at the person’s home or another private residence
  • 13 (or 9.1%) in an aged care facility
  • 11 (or 7.7%) in a district health board facility
  • 6 (or 4.2%) in a hospice facility.

Right To Life is committed to the repeal of the End of Life Choice Act 2019 . We will seek to expose it for the threat that it is to the most vulnerable. We will vigorously oppose the anticipated attempts by ACT to extend the scope of the killing to include those with a disability and the inclusion of advance directives. We will not rest until this evil legislation is repealed.

RIGHT TO LIFE NZ INC PRESIDENTS REPORT 2021-2022

PRESIDENTS REPORT FOR 2021-2022 delivered at the AGM held on 27 May 2022

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,

It has been an eventful and busy year again for our society and for pro-lifers during the past 12 months.

During this past year, we have seen the implementation of the End of Life Choices Act in November 2021, with euthanasia now legally available, the rollout of telehealth abortion services via telephone service provided by private health organisations, resulting in an increase in medical abortions done at home, and the passing of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion (Safe Areas) Amendment Act.

Your society has been active and busy due to all of these developments, having campaigned against both the new abortion law and the euthanasia law. As you know, we spent a considerable sum of money on billboard, radio and poster advertising promoting the choice to vote No against the legalisation of euthanasia in the 2020 Referendum held at the general election.

Sadly, as you know, the No vote lost and the Yes vote won, paving the way for the End of Life Choice Bill to be passed into law, and to take effect one year after the date of the referendum. Since 7 November 2021, there have been 92 killings of terminally ill people legally carried out, and  done under this “assisted dying” law as it is euphemistically called.

Currently we are working on the implication of this new law, by writing to retirement village and rest home and hospital providers, asking them if they permit euthanasia in their facilities. When we receive responses from all of them, we will put out a media release on this topic. It is of great concern, as we know the current euthanasia law is poorly framed, and offers few if any safeguards against abuse, and it may compromise the morality and ethics of rest home staff and other residents, who do not wish to see or participate in the killing by lethal injection of their fellow resident.

The passing of the Safe Areas legislation is another blow for the pro life movement. In June 2021, Right to Life made a personal submission opposing this new law, in front of the Health Select Committee at Parliament Buildings. We argued that this law , which makes it a criminal act to harass or to communicate in any way with women going into or proceeding out from abortion clinics, in relation to their abortion appointments, is suppressing the rights to freedom of association, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. By imposing a safe zone of 150 metres around the boundaries of any hospital, health clinic or facility where abortion is practiced, it may prevent peaceful assemblies of prolife Christians and others from holding prayer vigils or offering support to those women who are going to their appointments for an abortion. Our society lobbied parliament against this unjust law, and wrote to all members of parliament asking them to vote against it.

This law was passed based on a false premise that complaints of harassment of women at abortion clinics by prolife people had been received, thus justifying the need for the law. We made enquiries of every District health Board in NZ which offers abortion services, and of the Police, and found there was no record of any complaints to the DHBs of harassment against women or staff involved with providing abortion services in the past 2 years, but the Police could not provide any details of complaints to them.

Notwithstanding that the Safe Areas law was passed on 16 March 2022 by 108-12 votes, we continue to support prolife prayer vigils outside Christchurch Womens and Public hospitals. On Mondays a small group of members gather at 2pm for an hour to pray.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the annual Christchurch March for Life, which was to have been held in December 2021 and then postponed to March 2022 was cancelled. We have supported this annual national event since its inception in 2018, by having members of the society march in Wellington, and we have provided logistical and financial support for the Christchurch March for Life.

Also the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil was not held this Lenten season. This was partially due to an oversight in that we did not register for this campaign with the United States franchise holders and pay the fee by the required date. Also however, we have found it difficult to find the required number of people to volunteer to pray for one hour or so during the week, for the 40 days of the campaign. We hope that another campaign can be run in Christchurch later this year.

In 2021 we supported member Sarah-Jane Cleaver’s petition to parliament, which requested that babies born alive after abortions be provided with palliative care. This petition gathered 6586 signatures and was presented to parliament on 30 April 2021.

Our society also supported a petition to parliament calling for the protection of the right to free speech, assembly and association by rejecting the safe areas Bill before parliament. This petition gathered 1806 signatures, and was presented to parliament on 22 November 2021.

Our society also supported the petition of Sarah-Jane Cleaver calling for parliament to legislate to stop taxpayer funding of abortions. This petition gathered 897 signatures and closed on 30 December 2021. It has been presented to parliament by Simon O’Connor.

Our society is committed to the repeal of the Abortion Legislation Act, as it was not presented or debated  in a manner reflecting the democratic majority of New Zealanders. The select committee process was deeply flawed, as only a very small number of submissions were allowed in person, and only 1 day of submissions was allocated in Christchurch. Written submissions opposing this new law were allowed, and the majority were opposed to the  law, but this was not mentioned in the select committee report to parliament on the Abortion Legislation.

A petition to parliament calling for the repeal of this unjust law via a referendum gathered over 40300 signatures, this petition was not organised by our society, but was presented to parliament, tabled in parliament and then totally ignored.

Likewise, our society is also committed to the repeal of the End of Life Choices Act. This law was not passed in a democratic and fair manner, with over 90% of the submissions to parliamentary select committee being opposed to legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide. However the select committee ignored this majority opposed to the new law, and in their report to parliament they did not recommend that the new law not be presented to parliament.

We are concerned that the democratic will of New Zealand people is being ignored in the process of passing these new laws, and that spurious complaints, for which there is no recorded, are being used to justify the passing of a law such as the Safe Areas Act. This can be seen as an erosion of our democracy and a subversion of the process of democracy.

We are also committed to a campaign to achieve legal recognition of the status of the unborn child as a human being from conception in law, and endowed by its creator with an inalienable right to life.

This means that the 400 year old legal fiction that a foetus is not a human being until it is born, needs to be removed from the law. Currently the law does not recognise the killing of a child in its mothers womb as a crime, except in the circumstance where a person assaults the pregnant mother, causing her pregnancy to finish and the unborn child to be aborted or to die inside the womb.

In the past 12 months, we have made 114 media releases, which is 2 releases per week. All of these have been posted on our society website  www.rightotlife.org.nz and also sent by e-mail to over 260 members and to other outside groups, including all members of parliament, and as well as posted on our Facebook page and sent out  in our Twitter feed.

Your society has also made more than 100 Official Information Act requests in the past 12 months.

In the last 12 months, we have produced 3 newsletters for our members.

We have not produced the printed magazine Footprints last year, as we decided to save printing and postage costs.

We have supported 2 committee members to attend the pro-life organisations leaders conference and retreat, held in June 2021 on the North Shore of Auckland, and in Feb 2022 in Queenstown. Philip Creed attended last year, and Chris O’Brien attended this year. Both retreats afforded an opportunity to network with other prolife organisations, exchange information, and to learn from the excellent presentations made by various experts in their relevant fields. Also it was a time to recharge ourselves, to pray and reflect on our achievements and our losses, and to plan for the year ahead, and to ensure greater cooperation and collaboration among prolife groups and people.

We also supported the Prolife remembrance service held last June in Hagley Park, organised  by Voice for Life.

We have donated 6 foetal models of unborn children at 20 weeks pregnancy to the Pregnancy Choice organisation, which will use them in counselling pregnant women at their centres.

We remember those members and supporters of our society who have died in the past 12 months. In particular,  we remember:

Peter McMullan, a faithful member and attendee at prayer vigils,

Philip Baird LLB, a former committee member, benefactor and supporter of the Post Abortion Healing Trust,

Hermann Janssen, former committee member and long-time member,

Don Brebner of Tauranga, a prayer warrior for the unborn,

Mrs Lillian Carr, a former committee member and a life member, who died aged 98 years in March 2022 and

Dave Hunter, who died recently.

I wish to thank our dedicated committee executive for their hard work and energy in the prolife cause this last year, Ken Orr for his thoughtful media releases, letters to the editor, OIA requests and letters to government departments, health boards and agencies, and opinion pieces published in some newspapers,  Chris O’Brien for his website maintenance and updating work, and for liaising with other prolife groups, UC Prolife Canterbury and Voice for Life, and Paul Ives our treasurer for keeping track of membership, subscriptions and donations, and for managing our banking arrangements.

Also we thank our patrons, particularly Dr, Norman McLean, for his helpful comments and suggestions. We have invited the new Bishop of Christchurch, Most Rev. Michael Gielen, to act as a patron of our society.

Wellbeing budget 2022 – objective – reduce child poverty

The Labour government’s 2022 “wellbeing budget” is an historic budget, for never before has a government budgeted for more money for the killing of New Zealanders under the guise of health care.

 The government have five objectives for the Budget 2022. The fifth objective is to reduce child poverty and improving child wellbeing. Right to Life asks the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who is also the Minister for Child Poverty Reduction, how she can reconcile that objective with the appalling killing of more than 13,000 unborn children every year in New Zealand. This is the ultimate in child poverty and a crime against humanity.      

Right to Life believes that those who kill the unborn and the very sick do not have a right to govern or to sit in our Parliament.

The first duty of the state is to uphold the sanctity of life and protect the life of every human being from conception till natural death.

Since Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister in 2017 more than 65,000 children have been violently killed before birth in their mother’s womb.

In addition a further 92 vulnerable patients have been killed by their doctor with a lethal injection or assisted in suicide following the introduction of the End of Life Choice Act on 7th November 2021.These killings are performed under the guise that this is health care authorised and funded by the government.

Right to Life also believes that the community should be aware that hidden in the “wellbeing budget” is continuing funding for the killing of the unborn as an essential service and for the terminally ill, with assisted suicide and euthanasia.

It is disappointing that the media are applauding the government for this budget which promotes a culture of death under the guise of a culture of life.

The Prime Minister, Jacinda Arden said on 12 September 2020.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that I want New Zealand to be the best place in the world to be a child. It’s an aspiration I’ve held for a long time. It’s one of the reasons I entered politics back in 2008.” Right to Life asks how can New Zealand be the best place in the world when you approve and support the funding of the killing each year of more than 13,000 unborn New Zealand children who are poisoned, violently sucked from their mother’s wombs or brutally and painfully dismembered, their torn bodily remains are treated as medical waste and disposed of at the local tip?”

State Killing of Patients Welcomed by Minister of Health

Right to Life deplores and grieves over the government’s abandonment of its fundamental duty to God and the community to uphold the sanctity of life of every human being created in the image and likeness of God. The government defying the fifth commandment, Thou shalt not kill, will endure the wrath of God.  

 The Minister of Health, Andrew Little, stated that New Zealand was now ready for “assisted dying.” The Ministry of Health’s website proclaims, “Assisted dying is a new health service in New Zealand.”

Assisted dying is a new health service in New Zealand Aotearoa, a core health service with unlimited funding. The commencement of killing vulnerable patients or assisting in their suicide is a radical and diabolical change in our health care. The government of Jacinda Ardern is the first government in New Zealand’s history to have promoted legislation that empowers a doctor or practice nurse to assist in the assisted suicide or killing of a patient with a lethal injection. This is the government of compassion and kindness.

Emma Prestidge, group manager of the Quality Assurance & Safety group at the Ministry of Health responsible for overseeing the “new health service,” advised RNZ on 18th November that up to ten patients had been legally killed since the 7th November, she has declined to provide any further information on the numbers on the grounds that the service is new and emotive.

 The Ministry claims that it is anticipated that there will be about 950 requests for this new service in the first year with about 350 being approved. Euthanasia was legalised in Netherlands in 2001. In 2019 there were 6,361 patients legally killed, representing 4.4 % of the total deaths. In addition a further 500 patients are killed annually by involuntary euthanasia without the patient’s consent. If we follow Holland’s example we may anticipate in a short time legally killing more than 1,200 vulnerable patients and disabled persons every year. 

Right to Life warns the community that we are going to be subject to an aggressive campaign by ACT to expand the grounds for killing vulnerable patients

Right to Life wrote to David Seymour, leader of ACT on 17th November, who was proud to be the sponsor and enthusiastic promoter of the End of Life Choice bill. We asked him:

“Is it the policy of Act to seek or support amendments to the End of Life Choice Act that would reinstate your original objectives to provide “ assisted death” for:- Those with advance directives? For those who “have a grievous enduring suffering that is intolerable to the individual?”

He replied on 28th November, “Of course that is what the bill should read, I suspect we will give it a while until your fear mongering is mugged by reality, then we will press on.”

 Right to Life is committed to the repeal of this anti-life act and will vigorously oppose any efforts by ACT to amend the legislation to include advance directives, the killing of the disabled, children, babies and those with dementia or Alzheimer’s and removal of the requirement that the patient has six months to live.

Killing vulnerable patients is not a “health service”

The Minister of Health, Andrew Little stated that New Zealand was now ready for “assisted dying”. The Ministry of Health’s website proclaims, “Assisted dying is a new health service in New Zealand”.

 Right to Life totally rejects the Minister’s claim New Zealand, “was now ready”. We are not ready and we will never be ready to abandon our most vulnerable by withdrawing loving care. The Minister is aware that the public of New Zealand who supported the referendum were seduced and deceived with the government’s campaign of misinformation.

The Minister said “The Government is committed to ensuring health services are available equally to everyone who needs them, and this includes assisted-dying services”.  Right to Life believes that the Minister is mistaken in trying to make the murder of the vulnerable acceptable and respectable.

Right to Life challenges the Minister when he expresses a commitment to ensure that everyone who “needs” a doctor who is prepared to provide them with a lethal injection or to assist them in suicide, will have one regardless of where they live. Is the Minister prepared to make the same commitment to those who require palliative care?

The Minister has arranged generous funding to encourage doctors who are prepared kill their patient to travel long distances to achieve this objective. If the medical or nurse practitioner or a psychiatrist needs to travel to the patient, they may claim expenses and charge an hourly rate for the time.  The hourly rate is $120.80 for medical and nurse practitioners and $193.02 for psychiatrists

An attending medical or nurse practitioner can claim $1087.20 for killing their patient by euthanasia, or assisting them in their suicide.

In addition to the above fee, attending medical practitioners can claim $724.80 for responding to a patient’s request, completing the paperwork, giving the first opinion and referring for a second opinion or for a psychiatrist’s report.  If these requirements take more than three hours, the fee can escalate to $1208.

A further $362.40 may be claimed by the attending medical practitioner when they deliver the news as to the person’s eligibility and put in place the next steps such as support services, paperwork, and if eligible, arranging the time and date of death. The independent medical practitioner who gives a second opinion can claim $604.00.

Psychiatrists who determine the competency of the person requesting euthanasia or assisted suicide and who advises the medical practitioners if the person is eligible, may claim $1544.16.

Right to Life asks the Minister why the killing of patients is fully funded and the care of patients with palliative care in hospices is only 70% funded, leaving hospices to raise an estimate $77 million annually with cake stalls, raffles and donations, this is scandalous!

The result is that some patients needing palliative care will have difficulty accessing care and could be coerced into seeking a lethal injection or assisted suicide.

The killing of the vulnerable with lethal injection now health care

Right to Life encourages the Christian community to dedicate Sunday 7th November as a day of prayer in reparation to our Creator for the offence given to God with the introduction of the killing of the vulnerable terminally ill with a lethal injection or the assisting in their suicide.  Life is a precious gift of our Creator and He has commanded us in the fifth commandment, “Thou shalt not kill”, we ignore Him at our peril. We should also pray for God’s protection of the medical profession that they will uphold their ethic to do no harm and reject the killing of patients as a treatment option. That they too will not be seduced by the Minister of Health, Andrew Little and his generous financial inducement to doctors to participate in the killing of their patients.

We need to pray for God’s protection for the most vulnerable in our community, the aged the seriously ill and the handicapped, whom we fear, from overseas experience, may soon become victims of this insatiable monster that has been unleashed on our community.

Sunday 7th November is a day that will be recorded in our nation’s history as a day of shame and trepidation.

For on this day the End of Life Choice Act will have commenced its reign of terror among the most vulnerable members of our community.

This is the Bill sponsored by David Seymour of ACT, that became law because it had overwhelming support at its third reading of 33 Labour MPs, total support from the Greens with  8 MPs, NZ First with 9 MPs and 17 MPs from National.

We must not ever forget the shameful progress of this bill through Parliament. It passed its first reading 76 to 44 on the 13th December 2017. It was then referred to the Justice Select Committee that received 39,000 written submissions, 91.8% opposed to euthanasia and this bill.

The Committee also heard 3,600 oral submissions with 85% being opposed to the bill. In view of the overwhelming opposition to the bill the Select Committee reported back to Parliament that it could not recommend that the bill be passed. The bill passed its 2nd reading 70 to 50 on 26th June 2019. The bill was finally passed at its 3rd reading 69 to 51 on 13 November 2019.

The Act was subject to a national referendum at the general election on 17th October 2020.

Right to Life believes that the government’s information programme, ostensibly to inform the community of the consequences of the Act was misleading and biased.

A poll conducted in New Zealand between 31 October and 6 November 2019 by Curia Marketing on behalf of Euthanasia Free New Zealand revealed the following disturbing findings on what the End of Life Choice Bill would provide.

  • 85% thought that it included turning off life support
  • 79% thought it includes ‘do not resuscitate’ (no CPR) requests
  • 67% thought it includes the stopping of medical tests, treatments and surgeries.

The End of Life Choice Act does NOT make it legal to turn off life support, to make a ‘do-not-resuscitate’ request (no CPR) or to stop medical treatment.

These end-of-life choices are already legal and are not euthanasia. In these situations, a patient would die of natural causes – from their underlying medical condition.

The End of Life Choice Act is NOT about pain relief.

It’s already legal for a doctor to give a person enough medication to address their pain and make them comfortable, even if this may hasten their death as a side effect as the doctor seeks to neither hasten or cause the death of his patient.

This poll demonstrates that the public was not yet aware of the content and meaning of the End of Life Choice Act. We believed that in order to have a fully informed public referendum on this critical issue of allowing doctors to give patients a lethal injection or to assist in their suicide, it was essential that the above information be included on the government Referendum website.

Right to Life wrote to the Minister of Justice, Andrew Little requesting that this information be displayed on the government web site, the Minister refused. Right to Life believes that if the government had sought to properly inform the community of this critical information the referendum would have been soundly defeated.

Government an increasing threat to human rights?

 Right to Life believes that the government of Jacinda Ardern is increasingly threatening our human rights. This is the most anti-life government that New Zealand has ever had.

 The first duty of government is to protect the right to life of every New Zealander from conception to natural death, it has failed to do this.

The government is threatening our human rights:-

With its anti-life Abortion Legislation Act 2020, which has denied the humanity and right to life of the unborn from conception until they are born. It is now no longer a crime to kill an unborn child up to birth.

This is violence against women and the defenceless unborn, It also undermines the dignity of women and motherhood.

With its support for the passing of the End of Life Choice Act 2019, which will allow, after 7th November 2021, doctors to kill their patients with a lethal injection or assist in their suicide. This is a threat to the lives of the elderly and the seriously ill.

  • Violating our right to free speech, assembly, communication and freedom of religion through its support of government policy incorporated in the contentious Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion [safe areas] Amendment bill of Louisa Wall MP, currently with the Health Select Committee.
  • Threatening the freedom of the media with $55 million funding with the requirement that it promotes the government’s agenda.
  • Potentially violating our right to free speech, with proposed hate speech laws, which may allow the government to decide what we may think and what we may say and potentially criminalise criticism of the government.
  • Attacking the traditional family of exclusively one woman and one man, with its promotion of the LGBTQI agenda which seeks to deny the truth that there are only two genders male and female, established at conception.
  • Challenging Family First’s charitable status in an appeal to the Supreme Court, that its advocacy for the traditional family does not serve the community.
  • Rejecting the 90 % of the 25,000 submissions made to the Abortion Legislation Select Committee which opposed its radical Abortion Legislation bill.
  • Rejecting the vast majority of the 39,159 submissions made to the Justice Select Committee opposing the End of Life Choice bill.

The government should realise that those who govern do so with the consent of the  governed.

The Prime Minister promised the nation following the general election in 2017, “that this would be the most transparent and accountable government New Zealand had ever seen”.

Right to Life believes that this government is neither transparent nor accountable and that the reality is an artfully crafted mirage.

The government is ignoring the will of the people that it is committed to serve, they will not forget.

Is the Government serious about suicide prevention?

How can the government be serious about supporting its Suicide Prevention Strategy while at the same time the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and an overwhelming number of government MPs support government sanctioned and funded doctor assisted suicide? How can the Prime Minister say that she was wary of sending any message “that there was a tolerance for suicide in New Zealand.”

 The government has 2 task forces set up within the Ministry of Health. The first to implement the government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy and the second to implement   assisted suicide and euthanasia under the End of Life Choice Act, which comes into operation on 7th November 2021.

Right to Life asks is the government’s position incoherent?

We question the government’s sincerity in claiming to oppose suicide and working to prevent all suicide, while at the same time being committed to legalising and funding assisted suicide.

The taxpayers of New Zealand have a right to ask why the government has budgeted $40 million over four years in 2019  for the implementation of the Suicide Prevention Strategy, while in the 2021 budget the government has funded more than $11 million to provide assisted suicide and euthanasia under the End of Life Choice Act.

The government will be paying doctors to assist in suicide of their patients under the guise of health care.

A total of 654 people died by suicide in New Zealand in 2019/20. Our statistics are appalling, we have the highest youth suicide rate in the 41 member OECD.  Right to Life commends the government for including in the budget for 2019 funding for suicide prevention, specifically $40m for Maori and Pasifika suicide prevention

The government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy 2017 defines suicide as –“a death where evidence shows that the person deliberately brought about their own death.”

In New Zealand a coronial ruling decides whether a death is classified as suicide.

The strategy does not seek to define suicide as rational or irrational, all suicide is irrational.

Suicide is self – murder it is always morally wrong, it violates the sanctity of life and the fifth commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” Suicide hurts families and communities and the government should be committed to preventing all suicides.

Euthanasia is about doctors killing their patients or assisting in their suicide. It is intrinsically evil; no referendum can legitimise anything which is evil. The prohibition against taking the life of another human being is the foundation of the law and medicine.

It is always wrong to kill another innocent human being.

The approval of the community, even in a referendum, can never make manslaughter or suicide  acceptable.

Right to Life believes that the government supported the referendum to distract public criticism from the government and to seduce and to implicate the whole community in the murder of the vulnerable.

Our nation is facing unprecedented threats to life in 2021. Right to Life believes that New Zealand has the most anti-life government in our history. The government of Jacinda Ardern is responsible for legislation that allows for the killing up to birth of our unborn and the killing of the seriously ill as a health service.

The End of Life Choice Act 2019 will be effective from 7 November 2021. This legislation if not repealed will ultimately corrupt the medical profession and destroy the trust that the community has in the profession. Right to Life is conducting a campaign to repeal this Act and has sought the cooperation of other pro-life groups. This legislation is intrinsically evil and we have a serious moral obligation to oppose it and to ultimately have it repealed.

An important part of our campaign is supporting medical practitioners to uphold the ethics of the medical profession and to refuse to co-operate in killing their patients by assisting in their suicide or giving them a lethal injection. For your protection we encourage you to entrust your life and health and that of your family only with doctors who uphold the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. We are campaigning for doctors to make it known to their patients that they refuse to co-operate with the killing of defenceless patients. Ideally medical centres should display a notice that declares that this is a euthanasia free surgery.

To assist you we have prepared a letter that you may use or amend to give to your general practitioner. The letter may be viewed on our Right to Life web site www.righttolife.org.nz

You are invited to print this letter for your own use, adding the name of your local practice and your own name.

We are also campaigning pharmacists to uphold the sanctity of life ethic by exercising their conscience and refusing to fill prescriptions for lethal drugs to be used for killing patients with a lethal injection or to assist in their suicide. Pharmacists are to be encouraged to publicly declare that they are a euthanasia free pharmacy. .

It is our intention to publicise a list of doctors and pharmacies who are euthanasia free.

Abortion Legislation Act 2020.

This extreme anti-life and anti-feminist legislation came in to operation on 24 March 2020. The Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield now presides over the abortion industry in New Zealand. He is also responsible for ensuring the successful operation of the End of Life Choice Act 2019. It is tragic that the Ministry of Health that should be devoted to protecting the life and health of the community should now be intensely engaged in overseeing the killing of our precious unborn and the killing of the terminally ill and seriously ill. Dr Bloomfield has now created the Regulatory Assurance team to fully implement this legislation.

Challenging the culture of death. Right to Life is constantly engaged in seeking important information on life issues through the use of the Official Information Act .

Since May 2020 there have been 26 Official Information Act requests made to Ministers of the Crown and to District Health Boards, seven of these are now completed. There have also been 7 complaints lodged with the Ombudsman in the event that information requested under the Official Information Act was refused.

Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion [Safe Areas] Amendment bill.

This is a government bill posing as a private members bill sponsored by Louisa Wall MP. It is a farcical bill seeking to address an issue that does not exist. It was passed at its first reading by 100 to 15. The government said that it was a conscience vote, however Right to Life believes that the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern instructed her caucus to support this bill, as a consequence of the 65 MPs in her caucus 62 dutifully voted for the bill and promote the charade that this was a conscience vote, 3 MPs were permitted to vote against it. This bill is a serious threat to civil liberties. It is a threat to our right of free speech, assembly and communication guaranteed by the NZ Bill of Rights. This bill if passed could result in so called safe zones around killing centres of 150 metres that would prohibit any person praying or offering assistance to women seeking an abortion who sought help.

The bill has been referred to the Health Select Committee at Parliament for consideration and to receive written submissions from members of the public. Right to Life encourages our members and supporters to make a written submission to the Select Committee, Parliament Building, Wellington, no stamp required, or online at Parliamentary Services opposing this dangerous bill. The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 28 April 2021.

  • The Law Commission, on safe zones advised the Minister, “At this time the Commission does not see a strong case for this.”…”The Commission sought input from health professional bodies, abortion service providers and health practitioners about safe access zones. The majority felt that safe access zones were not needed.”
  • The Commission were also concerned that legislation imposing safe zones would be infringing on the right to freedom of expression, freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association protected by the Bill of Rights 1990.
  • The Commission also stated that it, ”has not seen any clear evidence that the existing laws around intimidating and anti-social behaviour are inadequate.”

Right to Life supports the right of compassionate, law abiding and caring people to assemble outside of abortion clinics to offer loving help to women who seek help to choose life for their children. There are many women who have been grateful for their presence and help in their hour of need.

The claim that a woman entering a public hospital for an abortion can be harassed, is simply not logical. How can anyone know that a woman entering a public hospital is going there for an abortion, it is simply impossible. The vast majority of abortion facilities are in public hospitals and it is not possible to know if a woman entering a hospital is attending an out patients clinic, visiting a sick relative or seeking an abortion.

Right to Life totally rejects the false and unsubstantiated claims that peaceful, caring law abiding citizens are harassing women. There is absolutely no need for this legislation and we call on Parliament to uphold the laws that uphold not take away our freedoms and human rights.
