Right to Life is grateful to all those who contacted their electorate and list MPs to request that they vote against the Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion [safe area] amendment bill of Louisa Wall MP at its second reading. It is important to speak up in defence of life, for our silence conveys consent. Right to Life had also written to every MP requesting a no vote.
Right to Life sent an open letter to Christopher Luxon signed by 200 of our members and supporters requesting that he vote against the anti-life bill. It is disappointing that he neither acknowledged or responded to our courteous letter. He voted for the bill having voted against it at its first reading.
It was disappointing that 108 MPs voted on the 16th February in favour of criminalising our right of free speech, assembly, communication and religion within 150 metres of an abortion facility. Right to Life had previously written to all 120 MPs requesting that they vote against the bill.
We are grateful to the 12 MPs who courageously voted against the bill:, Simeon Brown, Hirete Hipango, Melissa Lee, Neru Lecoasa, Simon O’Connor, Maureen Pugh, Chris Penk, Penny Simmonds, Louise Upston, , Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki, Jamie Strange, Michael Woodhouse
Right to Life has written to all these courageous MPs to thank them for defending life and our human rights.
It is expected that the third reading and final vote for the so-called ‘Safe Areas’ Bill will be on Wednesday the 16th of March.
Please defend life and our human rights by again contacting your local MPs, requesting that they vote against this anti-life bill.
Kind regards,
Ken Orr,
Secretary,
Right to Life
