Media Release 29/01/22
Right to Life requests that Members of Parliament protect women from harassment and intimidation and defend our human rights by voting against the fictitious safe area bill of Louisa Wall at its second reading in February. Public submissions were overwhelmingly opposed to bill.
Right to Life believes that under the guise of protecting women, the real purpose of this government bill masquerading as a private members bill, is to achieve public acceptance of the government’s policy on the killing of the unborn, which is to:
- Gain public acceptance of the killing of the unborn child as health care.
- To demonise those who are opposed to the killing of the unborn and to silence dissent.
- To increase pressure on women who are pregnant without the support of a husband to submit to abortion.
- To seek recognition that an abortion facility, a killing centre, is a safe place for women and their unborn.
The bill has been amended by the Select Committee to allow for the Minister of Health to designate a “safe area” not because it is necessary but merely because it is desirable. New Zealand wake up, why would Parliament suppress our human rights not because it is necessary but because it is desirable.
Right to Life asks,” why would the government desire to suppress our human rights of freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of communication and religion?”
Firstly because it wants to exercise control over what we believe. Secondly because it wants to control what we say and thirdly because it wants to control where we assemble.
Our human rights are endowed on us by our Creator, not by the state. When the state usurps the authority of the Creator and seeks to suppress our human rights we are then faced with a tyrannical state.
Right to Life requests that our parliamentarians defend our human rights by voting against this dangerous bill, recognising that this bill is not supported by the Law Commission, abortion providers or District Health Boards. There is also no evidence supporting this bill. Right to Life’s Official Information Act requests to the 20 District Health Boards seeking the number of written and oral complaints received in the last two years from women complaining of intimidation and harassment revealed that there were no complaints either oral or in writing, not even one.
The Health Select Health Committee completely ignored the overwhelming opposition of written and oral submissions made by the public. The Committee received 914 written submissions. There was overwhelming opposition to the bill with 635 submissions being opposed and only 175 in support, 103 submissions were considered neutral. This bill represents an important step in the government’s agenda to suppress our human rights, normalise the killing of the unborn and to control the community. The voting on this bill will reveal which Members of Parliament are prepared to defend life, freedom and democracy and those who support a tyrannical state. Those who sit in our Parliament should remember that they do so with the permission of the electorate.
