Media Release 18 December 2021
Right to Life believes that Nicola Willis, the National deputy leader, is doing a disservice to women, the National Party and the nation by refusing to uphold the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death.
Right to Life is disappointed that, Nicola Willis mistakenly believes that abortion is a faith issue which should therefore be kept separate from party policy.
The first duty of Parliament is to defend and protect the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death and not to preside over their destruction
In response to a recent Stuff media article by Andrea Vance, Nicola Willis states, “I just think that she underestimates the ability of people to see matters of faith separately from matters of policy and it’s been my experience that women are quite able of seeing capability in a leader and to trust in the policies of a party while disagreeing with them on conscience issues like abortion.”
It is profoundly disappointing that Nicola Willis refuses to do this herself, and proudly claims to be pro-choice, believing that it is pro-women. Right to Life believes that nobody has the right to choose to kill another innocent human being. Every child is a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God’s creation that is endowed at conception with an inalienable right to life, that deserves our respect and protection.
Nicola Willis believes in the autonomy of women and control of their bodies. There are more than 6,000 female unborn babies violently murdered in their mother’s womb each year, why does she not support their autonomy; and their right to be born?
Our right to life is not a faith issue, it is a human rights issue which is recognised in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and the New Zealand Bill of Rights.
She voted for the extremist Abortion Legislation Act and voted against the seven amendments that would have provided increased protection for women and the unborn. These were providing care for babies born alive in an abortion, protection for disabled babies, provision of pain relief for babies and late term protection. This is a public declaration that she believes that:-
- The unborn child is not a human being and does not become a human being with a right to life until it is born.
- Women have a right to choose to kill their children before birth.
- It is not a crime to kill an unborn child but in the words of our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern abortion is “a reproductive choice for women.”
Right to Life is disappointed that Nicola Willis supports a woman’s right to kill her children in the womb if they are unwanted, when she is the mother of four beautiful children, who will be well aware of the humanity of the unborn child, the wondrous miracle of life in the womb, the dignity of motherhood and the need to protect her child.
Right to Life believes that Nicola Willis, as a loving mother enhanced with a brilliant academic record, should be at the forefront of defending the lives of our unborn the weakest and most defenceless members of our human family and opposing the violence of abortion against vulnerable women.
