Media Release 2 December 2021
The defence of the right to life is the most important human rights issue facing New Zealand today.
Right to Life therefore commends the National Party for electing a new leader who defends the right to life of every New Zealander from conception to natural death. The new leader, Christopher Luxon, is a person of integrity with high ideals of serving the public and is expected to promote the common good by promoting a culture of life and opposing a culture of death.
Christopher Luxon told Newshub that his Christian faith “gives me centre, mission and purpose.”
Right to Life is confident that as a man of faith, he has a clear vision of why he is here and where he is going: these are the attributes that we need in our national leader, a leader who is concerned not for the next election but the next generation. May Christopher Luxon be a blessing for our nation.
Although not in parliament at the time of its passing, Christopher Luxon was opposed to the Abortion Legislation Act 2020, instigated and promoted by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, which permits the killing of the unborn up to birth.
He was also opposed to the anti-life End of Life Choice Act 2019, supported and promoted by Prime Minister Ardern.
It is encouraging that his views on defending life have overwhelming support from the community. In 2019 Parliament passed the End of Life Choice Act which violates the sanctity of life and provides for doctors to kill their patients or assist in their suicide.
The Justice Select Committee which had the responsibility of considering this bill received 39,159 written submissions. 90% of these submissions were opposed to the passing of the End of Life Choice bill.
In 2020 Parliament passed the Abortion Legislation Act, which has removed the killing of unborn children from the Crimes Act. It is now no longer a crime to kill an unborn child as the government upholds the legal fiction that the child is not a human being with a right to life until it is born. Abortion is now health care.
The Abortion Legislation Select Committee had the responsibility of considering the Abortion Legislation bill which received 25,000 written submissions. 91.6% of these submissions were opposed to the decriminalisation of abortion and the passing of this bill.
The overwhelming opposition of the community to these two anti-life laws is an endorsement of the pro-life views of Christopher Luxon and a rejection of the anti-life views of the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, who vigorously supported and promoted these laws.
The electorate now has a clear choice in electing at the next election our national leader and the opportunity to elect Christopher Luxon to defend life and family.
