That the House of Representatives amend the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act 1977 (as amended by the Abortion Legislation Act 2020) to make sex-selection abortion illegal in New Zealand, impose heavy penalties on abortion providers who break the law, and require abortion providers to record the sex of aborted foetuses.
I believe women’s rights should begin in the womb. Overseas evidence shows that sex-selection abortion targeting female foetuses is widespread in some populations. The same populations are well represented in NZ. In my view, Parliament’s stated opposition to sex-selection abortion and requirement for the Ministry of Health to review evidence of the practice and report to the Minister of Health are meaningless. Please amend the law and legislate against gender-based foeticide.
