The Following letter has been sent to all NZ First MP’s
Decriminalisation of Abortion
I am writing to you to earnestly and respectfully ask you to withhold your support for a bill to decriminalise abortion that is being drafted by the Minister of Justice, Andrew Little, at the direction of the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern.
The Prime Minister believes that the killing of unborn childen, should no longer be a crime, but rather be a “reproductive choice for women”. Since the founding of our nation Parliament has recognised the duty of the state to provide effective legal protection for women and their precious unborn through the provisions of the Crimes Act. This protection has been an integral part of our laws since 1856. Section 182, Killing of unborn child and Section 183, Procuring abortion by any means, has outlawed abortion and provided a sentence of up to 14 years for any person convicted of this crime against women and their child in the womb.
Right to Life lodged an Official Information Act request with the Prime Minister in December 2018 asking her under the Official Information Act what evidence she had to support her claim that the killing of an unborn child in an abortion was not a crime. The Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s office, Mike Munroe, replied on 1st December 2018, that the Prime Minister had no such evidence. How can any MP with a conscience and integrity support the Prime Minister’s opinion that the killing of an unborn child is not a crime, when she has not provided a thread of evidence to support her opinion?
The proposed Decriminalisation of abortion represents an unprecedented attack on the right to life of New Zealanders in the first nine months of life in their mother’s wombs. The objective of the Decriminalisation of abortion is to remove unborn children who are classified as unwanted, from the protection of the Crimes Act. This in order to enable them to be killed under the misnomer of being a ‘reproductive health choice’, under the Health Act. This intolerable injustice, is a violation of human rights and a crime against humanity. In attacking the right to life of the unborn she is attacking the right to life of all.
It is also an affront to women, to contend that their unborn children are not human, when that fact is settled science. It is also astounding that our government would act in such a way as to declare that it should have no interest in protecting our unborn children, the weakest and most defenceless member of our human family. In effect to declare that the child is the mother’s property and can be disposed of at will.
It is pleasing to note that the coalition agreement that you have with the Labour Party declares that NZ First is committed “to reduce inequality and poverty.” The Decriminalisation of abortion will increase discrimination by classifying an estimated 13,000 unborn New Zealanders each year as “unwanted”, their killing no longer being a crime and merely a “reproductive choice for women”.
It is commendable that you wish to reduce poverty. The greatest poverty is to be deprived of your life before you are born. Right to Life is passionately pro-life, pro-women and pro-family. The Decriminalisation of abortion is promoted by the Prime Minister as being pro-women. How does she propose promoting the empowerment of women and women’s equality by sanctioning the killing of an estimated 6,500 women in the womb each year?
Right to Life requests that you withhold support from any bill seeking the decriminalisation of abortion. We support genuine abortion law reform which will truly benefit women and their precious unborn. The Crimes Act section 159 Killing of a child, sustains the fiction that an unborn child does not become a human being until it is born. This section is there for the purpose of the Act to differentiate between homicide and the killing of an unborn child. It was not the purpose of Parliament to deny the humanity and the right to life of the unborn. We suggest that you consider promoting legislation that will repeal section 159 and recognise the unborn child from implantation as a human being endowed by its Creator with an inalienable right to life.
NZ First has an enviable reputation for working in the best interest of New Zealanders. Politicians are concerned about the next election. Statesmen are concerned for the next generation. In this important moment of history, please reject the Decriminalisation of abortion and uphold a founding principle of our nation, that it is a crime to kill an unborn child.
May NZ First stand with courage and integrity alongside women and our unborn in rejecting the decriminalisation of abortion.
