The state has a duty to protect women and their unborn from violence. In 1856 the New Zealand Parliament recognised that abortion was violence against both women and the unborn and made abortion unlawful under the Crimes Act, Part VIII Crimes against the Person. Abortion was recognised as a serious crime in the Common Law of England.
The Labour led government of Jacinda Ardern under the guise of empowering women is proposing to decriminalise abortion and disguise the violence by calling it a “health service” this is not empowerment but slavery.
Abortion is not health care. The government’s proposal is a shameful abandonment of women and will expose women to increased violence. This cruel deception of women perpetrated by the government is deceiving women into believing that their unborn child has no value and that the state has no interest in protecting her or her defenceless unborn. Their claim is that, when we kill an unborn child, we do no harm as it is not a human being and it therefore has no rights.
Vulnerable women will be exposed to increased coercion, physical and sexual violence from the father of their children who will be empowered to impose pressure on women to terminate the life of their children. This is because for the many women who are facing coercion to abort their child against their will, they will, if abortion is no longer a crime, have even less power to resist the coercion of the father or those pushing them in the direction of killing. Arguments such as “it’s only a health issue”, will be used against the mother.
With the decriminalisation of abortion it is likely that up to 24 weeks gestation, the only question that will be asked by a doctor of women seeking an abortion is, “is this what you want?”. We believe it is unlikely that the screening that is presently in place under the current legislation, for coercion or for physical and sexual violence, will remain in place. We believe It will be more difficult to determine if a woman resisting abortion, has been subjected to violence and the threat of abandonment, when she presents for an abortion.
How can the government and the Family Planning Association claim that abortion, the violent killing of a child in the womb, should no longer be a crime and should now be accepted as a health service?. Abortion is the only ‘health service’ that has as its objective, the violent killing of a patient.
Should the government succeed in its diabolical plan to remove women and their unborn from the protection of the Crimes Act the government will then have the opportunity to follow in the steps of Communist China and legislate to make abortion not just a right for women to choose but a duty. The state would then be able to claim the right to make abortion compulsory as part of a national health policy. In China families cannot have a child without a permit from the state. All women who conceive a child without a permit are forced to have an abortion. Women who are unmarried and are pregnant are forced to terminate the life of their child, as are women who have had more than two children.
The New Zealand Family Planning Association is believed to support the right of governments to restrict births to only those authorised by the state with compulsory abortions for unauthorised births. This policy was established by Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood. Margaret Sanger, “America Needs a Code for Babies,” Article 5, March 27, 1934
Right to Life earnestly requests that our community rise up in defence of our women and their unborn and vigorously oppose this diabolical socialist attack on women and our unborn.
