Right to Life is appalled at the government’s embarrassing inconsistency in defending human rights. While the Minister of Justice, Andrew Little is commended for his principled high moral stand on Australia’s Foreign Correspondent programme this week, he is nevertheless being hypocritical. He warned that Australia was in breach of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in its detention of a 17 year old New Zealander.
Andrew Little lambasted Australia’s lack of “humanitarian ideals” and its “breach of human rights”. He continued to hold the high moral ground by saying “it seems to me that there is a venal political strain to all this,” Andrew Little in representing the New Zealand government at the periodic review of our human rights by the United Nations Committee reviewing our performance on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights at Geneva in April this year, claimed that “New Zealand has a strong human rights record”, but this is not so.
Right to Life challenges these Ministers on taking the high moral ground in criticising the Australian government on its human rights performance in respect to the detention of one teenager on the grounds of our excellent human rights record? Why? These Ministers are in shameful denial of our own appalling human rights record. Since 1978, 500,000 unborn children have been murdered in mostly Public Hospitals in abortions sanctioned and funded by the government; this is an appalling violation of human rights which is an intolerable burden on the conscience of the nation. For how long must we endure this killing of the innocent and the wounding of their mothers, the second victim of abortion?
It is this Minister of Justice acting on the direction of the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and with the approval of the Acting Prime Minister who has written to the President of the Law Commission directing that the Commission provide advice to the Minister on how abortion may be treated as a “reproductive issue of choice for women” and not an issue for the Crimes Act. The Minister and his government believe that the killing of the unborn is not a crime and is a health issue. This is an unprecedented and cowardly attack on the human rights of our precious unborn who are the weakest and most defenceless members of the human family.
The Ministers are conspiring to deceive the community under the smoke screen of a phony abortion law review by the Law Commission by claiming that when we kill an unborn child we do no harm because we do not kill anybody with human rights. When is the media which is supposed to be at the service of the community, going to expose this diabolical and evil plot of the government to murder our unborn classified as unwanted as a reproductive health service? When too are the Churches who have a duty to God to defend life, going to speak up in defence of God’s precious infants?
