Media Release Saturday 14th April 2016
Right to Life commends the government for considering introducing a zero road death policy by 2020. Last year 380 persons tragically lost their lives on New Zealand roads. This is an appalling statistic. Every death is a tragedy for families and the community. Every one of these deaths was preventable. However If the government is really serious about eliminating preventable deaths, should they not recognise that the most dangerous place today for New Zealanders is not on our roads but in the mother’s womb?
Last year 12,823 New Zealanders were killed in their mother’s womb, each one of these deaths was preventable. For every road death there were 34 abortion deaths. All of these deaths were preventable. They were not prevented because the government and the community were and still are, not prepared to provide sufficient support to women for them to choose life for their precious children. The government has a serious moral obligation to introduce a zero abortion policy to make abortion unacceptable and unthinkable. This government and previous governments are actually complicit in the killing of these innocent and defenceless children. Here are some points to consider:
- It is the government that legislates for the efficient running of the abortion industry.
- It is the government that authorises the killing.
- It is the government that provides free abortion to New Zealand women and funds the abortion industry with unlimited funding as a core health service with no waiting list.
- It is the government that provides hospitals, abortionists and staff for the efficient running of the industry and decrees that every District Health Board has to provide this “termination of pregnancy service”.
- It is the government that deceives women by calling abortion a service to women and the killing a “reproductive health service.”
Our nation rightly grieves over our appalling road toll, but is reduced to silence over the killing of the innocent unborn whose deaths are just a statistic included in the annual report to Parliament of the Abortion Supervisory Committee. Who will mourn with the wounded mothers, who are frequently coerced into having an abortion and who are often bereft at the loss of their child? These children were considered to be of little worth. They were not recognised as human beings with an innate dignity and endowed at conception by their Creator with human rights; the foundation right being a right to life.
The media no longer comment on our abortion statistics because the killing of these children is not news, it is of little interest and concern. It was that mass murderer Joseph Stalin who said that, the killing of one person is a tragedy, but the killing of thousands, just a statistic.
It is a tragedy that the government accepts the preventable killing of the unborn and is now proposing to change the law to remove women and their unborn from the protection of the Crimes Act and to make the killing of the unborn, a ‘health’ issue. In the chilling words of the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, “to make changes in New Zealand’s abortion’s laws that are consistent with treating abortion as a health issue that is a reproductive choice for women” Let us as a caring nation seek to eliminate both our road toll and our abortion toll, all of which deaths are preventable deaths.
