Media Release Tuesday 19th September 2017
We celebrate today the victory in 1893 of Kate Sheppard and the feminist movement for New Zealand being the first democracy to grant to women the right to vote. It should be remembered that the feminist movement was also at the forefront in the defence of the natural family of exclusively one woman and one man. They recognised that the natural family was the foundation stone of a stable and healthy society. They were opposed to violence against women and children. They did not support a so called “woman’s right to choose,” to kill her child in the womb.
We are indebted to Kate Sheppard for her defence of life and family. We must never forget the importance of authentic feminism in the defence of life and family which is under increasing attack from the anti-feminist movement which seeks to destroy the family and its weakest and most defenceless member, the unborn child. Today the most dangerous place for a New Zealander is in its mother’s womb.
Right to Life urges Jacinda Ardern, the leader of the Labour party;
- To embrace the feminism of Kate Sheppard by committing to the protection and promotion of the natural family of exclusively one woman and one man.
- To oppose the violence of abortion against women and the unborn by being their champion and protector and by rejecting her commitment to decriminalising abortion.
- To promote effective legal protection for the right to life of all unborn children.
- To recognise that the greatest cause of child poverty in New Zealand today, is the lack of marriage and the natural family.
Right to Life believes that Jacinda Ardern could offer New Zealand much if she were to adopt a pro-family and pro-life stance.
