Media Release Wed 8th March 2017
The government has found it necessary to increase the age of eligibility to receive National Superannuation from 65 to 67. Right to Life believes that the primary cause for this drastic action is that New Zealand families are not having enough children. We are facing a demographic winter.
New Zealand has had a fertility rate well below replacement level since the late 70s. The replacement level is 2.1, our current level is 1.9. Our population is aging rapidly with a declining number in the workforce. It is estimated that by 2061 there will be 43 retirees depending on every 100 in the workforce. The aged population worldwide is currently at its highest level in human history. The rate at which our population is ageing, would be far higher if it were not for immigration. This trend is also apparent right across the Western World.
A major cause of our low fertility rate is the introduction of the contraceptive pill in the 1960s and abortion on demand in 1977. Since the passing of the Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion Act, more than 500,000 children have been killed in their mother’s wombs. These children, if they had been allowed to live would have entered the workforce and would have helped to sustain our economy and fund our National Superannuation. Many of them would have themselves gone on to have had families of their own. These missing New Zealanders are the reason we have a disturbing ageing demographic and a troublesome superannuation burden that will fall on the young.
Contraception and abortion come from a culture of death. A nation that kills its own children and embraces a culture of death has no future. Our Creator, in His love for us, has warned us, ”I offer you life and death; choose life that your children may live” Deuteronomy 30:19
Right to Life ask when is the government going to initiate a conversation with the community to address the fundamental question, why the younger generation is not accepting its responsibility to have more children?
The contraceptive pill not only prevents conception but is also abortifacient by preventing with a tertiary action the implantation of a human embryo in the womb of its mother. We will never know how many millions of new human beings have been lost through contraception. The Family Planning Association which promotes contraception, sterilisation and abortion must accept some responsibility for our disastrous fertility rate, which is seriously undermining the future of our nation.
