Right to Life Media Release 14 March 2013
The passing of the second reading of the Marriage [Definition of Marriage] Amendment bill on Wednesday the 13th March is a day that will go down in the history of our Parliament as a day of shame. The bill was passed in a conscience vote by 77 votes to 44. The third reading of the bill is expected on 3rd May.
It is a day of shame firstly because Parliament has a duty to uphold the common good. Marriage, consisting of one man and one woman is the foundation stone of the common good. Parliament and the government have a serious duty in justice to uphold and defend marriage as instituted by God from those who wish to redefine it. The people of New Zealand have a right to know why they abandoned the battlefield and allowed the forces of darkness to prevail. It was shameful that the leaders of six political parties in Parliament actually supported the bill. The Prime Minister because of his betrayal of the families of New Zealand has forfeited his right to lead this nation. David Shearer, the leader of the Labour caucus in Parliament because of his enthusiastic support for this destructive bill has also forfeited his right to be for elected as Prime Minister.
It is also shameful that the media have failed to uphold the common good and have supported the bill. They have failed the community that they claim to serve.
All authority comes from God and in His goodness He has given authority to Parliament to exercise this responsibility. At the beginning of each sitting day the Speaker leads Parliament in this prayer:
Almighty God ,humbly acknowledging our need for thy guidance in all things and laying aside all private and personal interest, we beseech thee to grant that we may conduct the affairs of this house and of our country to the glory of thy Holy Name , the maintenance of true religion and justice, the honour of the Queen and the public welfare, peace and tranquillity of New Zealand ,through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen.
It is disappointing that Parliament was not guided by these noble sentiments in dealing with this contentious bill. The exercise of right reason informs our conscience that God instituted marriage for the happiness of mankind and the procreation of the human race. In God’s plan marriage was exclusively for one woman and one man. It is within this institution that children were to be nurtured and loved. It is an unspeakable arrogance for Parliament to play God in redefining the institution of marriage. The inference is that God has made a mistake and we the Parliament of New Zealand is now going to correct his mistake. It is a fallacy for Parliament to redefine marriage to include same sex couples. This is not marriage, it was never marriage and it will never be marriage.
It is disappointing that in the Parliamentary debate that there was no acknowledgment of the adverse consequences for children who may be adopted by same sex couples. Every child has a human right to know and be loved by its biological parents. Every child needs a mother and a father. This bill denies the human rights of our most vulnerable children. It proposes that children do not need a mother and a father, just two men or two women who love them. We have the highest rate of fatherless children in the developed world, we have in this country a crisis of fatherless children. More than 200,000 children, a third of our children are growing up without their fathers. The passing of this anti social bill will result in an increase in fatherless children. Why would Parliament want to deprive children of their father?
This bill infringes on religious freedom and liberty by coercing the conscience of those ministers and registrars who are opposed in conscience to solemnising same sex marriages. Parliament has a duty to protect the conscience of those who are opposed to same sex marriage.
The bill is promoted with the objective of achieving equality and removing discrimination, it does neither. The first victims of this contentious bill are the members of the homosexual community. If we really cared about the welfare and happiness we would not be promoting this bill which is the greatest deception perpetrated on the homosexual community in living memory. For more than 150 years in our nation’s history, homosexual behaviour was considered damaging to homosexuals and to society, thus it was prohibited. Prior to 1867 a person convicted of buggery could be executed. In 1867 the law was changed from a sentence of execution for one of imprisonment up to life. In 1893 the law was changed to include any sexual act between men, the sentence imprisonment up to life with hard labour. In 1986 the Homosexual Law Reform Act was passed making it no longer an offence for homosexual acts between consenting males. In 2004 the Civil Unions Bill was passed protecting the rights of homosexuals in a same sex relationship. We have in a period of 120 years gone from prohibiting sodomy to permitting it and now Parliament is being asked to raise sodomy to the dignity of marriage. We deplore the imprisonment of homosexuals, we also deplore the cruel deception perpetrated against homosexuals which promotes the great lie of same sex marriage.
Our forbears recognised homosexuality as a disorder and oral and anal sex acts as unnatural, immoral and unhealthy. It is a disorder that can be successfully treated with compassion and proper therapy. Safe sex marriage would promote the false idea that homosexual behaviour is just as healthy and beneficial as heterosexual behaviour, it is not. If we really cared about the health and welfare of our homosexual community we would be promoting treatment and not the fallacy of same sex marriage.
It is hypocrisy for the greens and the Labour Party to demand that we have a national referendum to decide government asset sales and yet refuse to support a referendum on our greatest asset, marriage.
Right to Life earnestly requests Parliamentarians to defend marriage as instituted by God and defeat this socially destructive bill at its third reading.
