The Government Administration Parliamentary select committee has referred the Marriage [Definition of Marriage] Amendment Bill back to Parliament with the recommendation that it be passed. with amendments.
The majority of the Committee consider that marriage is a human right and that it is unacceptable for the state to deny this right to same-sex couples. This is spite of the fact that there is no United Nations Convention that declares that same sex couples have a human right to marriage or adoption.
Right to Life requests that Parliament recognises its very serious responsibility, to defend the institution of marriage being exclusively for one man and one woman. It should now firmly reject the recommendation of the select committee and defeat this mischievous and unjust Bill at its second reading.
In 2004 the Civil Unions Bill was passed protecting the rights of homosexuals in a same sex relationship. This gives homosexual persons effective equality under the law, without redefining the marriage relationship.
This Bill if passed will radically alter the meaning of marriage. This Bill for the first time in the history of New Zealand fundamentally seeks to break the existing legal link between the institution of marriage and sexual exclusivity, loyalty and responsibility for the children of the marriage.
The proponents of the Bill claim that it removes discrimination and achieves equality. It does neither. It discriminates against those who are married and who have made a public commitment to raise children. It is absurd and highly offensive to many who are married to be told that a same sex relationship is marriage and equal in dignity to marriage that is open to the creation of life.
The Bill, astoundingly confirms that the terms “husband and “wife” are to be removed from 16 pieces of legislation as it seeks to redefine marriage. The term “Bride” and “Bridegroom” will be removed from marriage certificates if the same-sex marriage Bill is passed by Parliament. The Bill if passed will require that we act out the charade that we no longer have brides, bridegrooms, wives or husbands.
The Bill discriminates against children. Every child has the right to know and be nurtured
by its mother and father. It is absurd to maintain that a child does not need a mother or father, but just to be loved by two men or two women in a same sex marriage. The unhinging of marriage as being exclusively between man and wife is is a sure way to ensure the acceleration of the disintegration of a civil society already under threat from the deliberate sabotaging of traditional family life by successive pieces of liberal legislation.
Children raised in “gay” households are up to 12 times more likely to self-identify as “gay”. Of those in their 20s – presumably after they have been able to work out any adolescent confusion or experimentation – 58 percent of the children of lesbians called themselves “gay” and 33 percent of the children of “gay” men called themselves “gay.” Contrast these rates with current studies indicating that around 2 percent of the general population is homosexual.
The institution of marriage was instituted by God exclusively for one woman and one man, Parliament is trying to play God, He will not be mocked, Parliament is in danger of bringing a chastisement on our nation. They should leave marriage alone.
