In it’s 2008 Report to Parliament the ASC failed to provide important data concerning abortions. Right to Life was concerned about this and has obtained this information and has sent it to all New Zealand MP’s. We believe it is important that the MP’s as well as the New Zealand public, have this information on NZ abortion. Our Society is disappointed that this information was withheld.
The Committee stated in their report that:
"the ASC would like to have presented the figures from 2006 – 2007 in a more user friendly format and provided statistical commentary but time constraints meant this was not possible this year. We have chosen not to include some tables which have been included in previous years because they have limited relevance without deeper analysis."
Some important statistics that were not made available in the report were:
. There were 83 abortions performed at over 20 week’s gestation in 2007.
. There were 7498 women who had an abortion in 2007 who had previously had an abortion.
. A total of 18,138 abortions, 98.7 per cent, were authorised on the grounds that the pregnancy was a serious danger to the mental health of the mother.
These statistics were obtained under the Official Information Act from the Abortion Supervisory Committee.
