Re March 30, the decision of the Auckland District Health Board to consider continuing with their scheme to provide free emergency contraceptive pills [ECP] to women is deplored. The scheme is morally bankrupt, it undermines our respect for human life, and the God given gift of our sexuality, it promotes promiscuity.
Promiscuity is the cause of our appalling abortion and STD statistics. If the Board were really serious about promoting health it should promote chastity before marriage and faithfulness within marriage. The ECP works by delaying release of an egg from the ovary. It also works by interfering with sperm migration therefore preventing fertilisation of an egg that has been released. Importantly it may also work by preventing a fertilised egg from implanting in a woman’s uterus. It is deplorable that the latter information is being withheld from women. It is a violation of their right to be fully informed and to give informed consent. Human life begins at conception. Every human embryo is a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God’s loving creation, they deserve protection. There have been 23 published studies from 10 countries that reveal that the easy access to the ECP does not result in a significant reduction in abortions.
