There is an international campaign to withhold from women information that proves that abortion may damage a woman’s mental health
Advocates of abortion sustain the myth that it is safe for woman, do so to ensure that men can have sexual freedom by abandoning women who have an unplanned pregnancy and rejecting responsibility for the children they have fathered. Women should be seen as the second victims of abortion. It is understandable that Dr Margaret Sparrow is in denial about the threat to woman’s health resulting from an abortion.
Dr Sparrow is the National President of the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand; she has held that office for 30 years. She has stated that the Association has a national membership of less than 200 members. With such miniscule support her Association does not represent the women of New Zealand Dr Sparrow was the Medical Director of the Parkview Abortion Clinic for 18 years and has probably performed well in excess of 40,000 abortions. It is to be expected that she would vigorously deny that abortion damages woman’s mental health. Dr Sparrow advocates a “woman’s right to choose” What is this right, it is the right of a mother to- be to destroy her own child. This is a human rights issue, the most important human rights issue of our age. There is no human right to destroy the life of another human being. Human life begins at conception, at that moment each human being is endowed by its Creator with inalienable human rights, the foundation right being a right to life. From conception the human embryo, is not a potential human being but a human being with great potential, who is a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God’s loving creation. There are thousands of women worldwide who are now silent no more and who are speaking up about their suffering, grief and the serious mental illness that has been inflicted on them by the termination of the life of their child by abortion. Many women are now receiving hope and healing from compassionate counsellors at agencies like Post Abortion Healing Services[PATHS] and Pregnancy Counselling Services. Why does Dr Sparrow not hear their voices and acknowledges their pain. Why too does she not promote adoption which is a loving option?
Dr Sparrow does a serious disservice to women in dismissing the study of “pro-choice” Professor David Fergusson an internationally renowned researcher of Christchurch. The study is accepted by peer reviewers as methodologically sound. His study found that 42% of woman at the age of 25 in the study who had an abortion had experienced major depression in the last four years. Those who had an abortion also had elevated rates of subsequent mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, suicidal behaviours and substance abuse disorders. Right to Life supports Professor Fergusson’s request that every woman considering an abortion should be advised of the results of this important study. Why does Dr Sparrow oppose this proposal as does the Abortion Supervisory Committee? Why too do they oppose the further research requested by Professor Fergusson?
The previous Labour government also refused to fund research stating that this research was not a priority. Dr Sparrow lauds the findings of a committee of the American Psychological Association [APA] which claimed that there was no evidence that abortion could damage the mental health of women. This report has been challenged by a 100 scientists and doctors as being false. The APA committee without justification dismissed the numerous peer reviewed studies conducted worldwide that revealed that abortion hurts women’s mental health. The studies showed that between 20 and 30 per cent of women who had an abortion experienced serious mental ill health. The APA was outrageous in basing its conclusions on just one unsound study that showed that abortion did not harm woman’s health.Three of the six persons appointed to the APA committee had strong pro-abortion views, the other three had made no previous public statement on abortion and mental health. Dr Brenda Major, chairperson of the committee and a ardent advocate for abortion has contrary to the ethics of the APA refused to provide supporting data of the study to those wishing to peer review the committee’s study. The conclusions of the APA are discredited as sham science serving the ideology of the APA which is a strident supporter of abortion. Dr Sparrow conveniently ignores the new policy position of the Royal College of Psychiatrists announced in March 2008 which reversed its policy made in 1994 that abortions did not result in mental ill health for women. The new policy adopted as a result of the increasing information provided by women stated; “Healthcare professionals who assess or refer women who are requesting an abortion should assess for mental disorder and for risk factors that may be associated with its subsequent development .” The policy also stated; “ Consent cannot be informed without the provision of adequate and appropriate information regarding the possible risks and benefits to physical and mental health.” Why are women considering an abortion in New Zealand being denied information on the potential damage to mental health resulting from abortion? Dr Sparrow and ALRANZ advocate for the decriminalisation of abortion as in Canada and the State of Victoria. This is a denial of the human rights of unborn children who are the weakest and most defenceless members of the human family. Such legislation denies the humanity of the unborn child, it would no longer be a crime to kill an unborn child. There were 18,382 abortions reported in New Zealand for 2007, 98 per cent were authorised on the grounds of mental health. Justice Miller in his judgment in the High Court in June 2008 stated that “there is reason to doubt the lawfulness of many abortions authorised by certifying consultants.” Dr Christine Forster, a previous chairperson of the Abortion Supervisory Committee had previously stated in the media that certifying consultants were using mental health grounds to provide abortion on demand. In view of Dr Sparrow’s occupation It is understandable that she is very concerned that the High Court has expressed doubt on the lawfulness of many abortions. Unborn New Zealanders deserve our respect and the full protection of the law for their right to life.
Women considering the termination of the life of their child in the womb deserve to be provided with accurate information on the development of their child, the options to abortion and the potential damage to their mental health that might result from having an abortion.
