Dear Mr Key
Re New Year Honours
Our Society wishes to express its displeasure and opposition to the appointment in the New Year honours of Dr Lillian Claire Rothwell as Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Dr Rothwell was appointed by Parliament on 30 August 2001 as the chairperson of the Abortion Supervisory Committee; she resigned that office on 1 March 2007. It is noted that Justice Miller in his judgment presented in June 2008 on the Judicial Review of the performance of the Abortion Supervisory Committee stated;
“There is reason to doubt the lawfulness of many abortions authorised by certifying consultants. Indeed the Committee has stated that the law is being used more liberally than Parliament intended.” “The Committee has misinterpreted its functions and powers under the abortion law, reasoning incorrectly that Wall v Livingston means it may not review or scrutinise the decisions of certifying consultants. I find that they may do so, using its power to require consultants to keep records and report on cases they have considered, for the purpose of performing its statutory functions”
As Dr Rothwell was the chairperson of the Committee, it is our opinion that she should accept some responsibility for the doubtful lawfulness of abortions performed during the tenure of her appointment
Dr Rothwell is a long serving certifying consultant at Level J abortion facility at the Wellington Hospital and has during the past eight years probably authorised the killing of thousands of unborn children.
In the light of the above information it is considered that it was inappropriate to honour Dr Rothwell for services to medicine.
