Right to Life believes that the stunning victory in the New South Wales Upper House presents a brilliant example for the New Zealand Parliament. The NSW Upper House on Thursday 11th May delivered a decisive 25 to 14 vote to defeat a contentious and dangerous bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW which would have permitted the killing of the child up to birth. The bill was presented by Green Party MP Mehreen Faruqi. The bill had the support of five Greens, eight Labour members and an Animal Justice Party member. Not a single vote came from the 21 government members, while three Labour members voted against it.
The bill was supported by the NSW Family Planning Association, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, [RANZCOG]. The bill was defeated because the Catholic Church in NSW mobilised to defend the lives of the unborn and their mothers.
