Right to Life considers it unequivocal that medical practitioners have the legal right to refuse to participate in the killing of unborn children. The Society commends those doctors who respect life and who follow their conscience and refuse to be involved in violence against the unborn.
The Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand [ALRANZ] has recently claimed that doctors who respect life and who refuse to be involved in abortion have no right to follow their conscience and should be compelled to refer women to another doctor who will facilitate the abortion. ALRANZ is advocating that doctors who refuse to refer, should be required to provide the patient with an automatic monetary compensation. It is appalling that this organisation wishes to punish doctors who refuse to be involved with the murder of the innocent and the infliction of violence upon women.
The Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion Act 1977, section 46 provides legal protection for any doctor or nurse who objects on conscience grounds to being involved with the killing of an unborn child, providing sterilisation of equipment used in that killing, or prescribing contraception. Pharmacists, are also permitted to refuse to provide contraception.
