Right to Life fully supports Simon O’Connor. He is absolutely right to question how Jacinda Ardern can be on one hand, (commendably) concerned about youth suicide, while on the other support assisted suicide. Suicide is suicide. This is just common sense, plain and simple and those who would attempt to argue otherwise are simply deluding themselves.
Her unwise support for David Seymour’s End of Life Choice bill gives the community the clear message that she would support doctors assisting in the suicide of the elderly, the disabled and the seriously ill. Members of Parliament and the community should have no illusions that euthanasia and assisted suicide are indelibly linked.
Right to Life does not question Jacinda Ardern’s sincere concern about our appalling youth suicide rate. It is, however, difficult to reconcile this concern with her support for euthanasia which includes doctor assisted suicide. It is quite reasonable to ask why she would be concerned at youth suicide, but apparently not with the assisted suicide of the elderly, the disabled and the seriously ill.
The Crimes Act section 179 prohibits Aiding and Abetting suicide on penalty on conviction of imprisonment for a term not exceeding 14 years. In the event that David Seymour’s bill was passed permitting doctors to administer a lethal injection or assisting in the suicide of a patient, this section would be required to be amended.
The medical profession is in no doubt that medical aid in dying includes assisted suicide which is illegal and unethical. Jacinda Ardern should be aware that the euthanasia movement previously used the correct term, physician assisted suicide. The word suicide discouraged many people from supporting suicide so the movement sought to disguise self-murder by using the euphemistic term medically assisted death.
Yesterday the New York High Court decided that ‘aid-in-dying’, also called ‘medically assisted dying’, is indeed assisted suicide and that there is no right to assisted suicide in New York
