Right to Life is disappointed in the decision of the Press Council released on 3rd October, to not uphold Right to Life’s complaint against an opinion article written by Jacki Edmund, CEO of Family Planning. There was one dissenting member of the Council who did not agree with this controversial decision. The article was titled “1960s abortion law unacceptable for 21 st century women of New Zealand.” The article was published in the Dominion Post on 5th July 2016.
Right to Life is concerned that the Council has failed to uphold Principle 4 which requires that material facts on which an opinion is based should be accurate. Ms Edmund has failed to comply with that principle.
Right to Life questions why the media allows the FPA to conduct its war on women and the unborn without challenge.
Why does the FPA claim to be a spokesperson for women, children and families? Ms Edmund and the FPA with its promotion of a culture of death, abortifacient contraception, sterilisation and abortion are no advocate for women, children and families.
Ms Edmund claims that the abortion law is a 1960s law. That is false the abortion law was passed in 1977. The Dominion Post failed to pick up this error.
Ms Edmund claims that the abortion law is broken and needs to be decriminalised taking it out of the Crimes Act and making it a health issue. It would then not be a crime to kill an unborn child. Ms Edmund has given no reasons why the law is broken. Right to Life contends that the law is not broken and that rather, Family Planning is largely responsible for the law being violated with abortion on demand; 98 per cent of requests for abortion are authorised. Ms Edmund is doing no service to women by pretending that the growing and living child in the womb is just ‘the contents of the uterus’ and not a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God’s loving creation
Ms Edmund states that rape is notably absent from our law as a reason to permit an abortion. This again is incorrect, the Crimes Act 187A states that rape may be taken into account in determining the authorisation of an abortion. Right to Life asks has she even read the legislation?
Ms Edmund claims that there is an “unwarranted stigma” surrounding abortion. There is always a stigma associated with the murder of the innocent, Changing the law to pretend that the killing of the unborn is a health service will not remove the stigma which is necessary for the protection of the human race.
Who has appointed the Family Planning Association [FPA] to represent the women of New Zealand? The FPA as the major abortion referral agency is at the forefront of the war against women and their unborn children. They have betrayed women and they have betrayed our families. The FPA do not encourage child bearing and they want women to choose abortion in preference to bringing their child to birth. They warn women falsely, that it is 14 times more dangerous for a women to choose birth in preference to having the child killed before birth. They promote abortion as an essential health service, it is not. They promote abortion as a women’s right to choose when in fact what is being chosen is to have a live baby or a dead baby.
