Dr Jonathon Coleman,
Minister of Health,
Dear Dr Coleman
Considering an Abortion What Are Your Options?
In 1998 the Ministry of Health produced a booklet, Considering an Abortion, What Are Your Options? This booklet is designed for women or couples facing a pregnancy which presents serious difficulties. “ The object of the booklet is to provide women with factual information on all the available options. These options include continuing with your pregnancy, with parenting, adoption or guardianship as your choices, or a legal abortion. This information should be carefully considered before making a decision. The basic facts about the foetal growth and development of your pregnancy are included.”
This booklet is now available from the website on the library catalogue of the Ministry of Health. It was expected that the booklet would be downloaded by doctors when dealing with a women who was considering her options, however it is not known if this booklet is being provided to women.
My Society recently sought information under the Official Information Act from your Ministry on the number of times the booklet had been downloaded during the previous five years. We were advised on 17 June that the information was not available as the library has no analytics functionality.
This booklet contributes to informed consent for women considering their options. In order to learn how effective this booklet is in helping women to give informed consent I believe that it is desirable to have information on the number of times the booklet is downloaded. I therefore request that consideration be given to providing the necessary analytics functionality.
