Free Speech – Threatened
The freedom of speech is under threat by the Auckland University Students Association at the Auckland University. A free and democratic society is founded on freedom of speech. The Association should vigorously defend freedom of speech in the University where there should be a free exchange of diverse opinions. The Association is considering the motion, that ProLife Auckland be disaffiliated for propagating harmful misinformation. The freedom of expression is protected by the Bill of Rights Act 1990, which states, “everyone has the right to freedom of expression, including the freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and opinions of any kind in any form.” The freedom of expression is also protected by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 18. The motion to disaffiliate ProLife NZ if passed would be a violation of human rights and could be subject of a complaint to the Human Rights Commission. This threat to freedom if allowed would ultimately pose a threat to the freedom of all.
It is disappointing that the media which can only function if free speech is protected is not speaking out in defence of this vital human right.
Right to Life.
