Re; New Zealand Family Planning Association – Licence to Kill Unborn Children
Right to Life was recently advised under the Official Information Act by the Abortion Supervisory Committee [ASC] that an application had been received from the New Zealand Family Planning Association for a licence to perform abortions at its Hamilton clinic. On March 11, the Association announced in a media release that it was their intention to apply to the ASC for a licence to perform chemical abortions at it 30 branches. The Association’s pursuit of a licence to kill unborn children is bad news for the unborn and bad news for women. The Association is promoting a culture of death.
Right to Life is opposed to this licence being issued to the Association. The Association is strongly pro-abortion and unsuitable to be granted a licence to terminate the lives of unborn children. The Association is the major abortion referral agency in New Zealand; it supports girls under the age of 16 being able to have an abortion without the knowledge or consent of parents. and has an employment policy to employ only doctors who believe that abortion is for a woman to choose in consultation with a doctor of her choice. This is abortion on demand which is unlawful in New Zealand. In the event of the Association being granted a licence to perform abortions, our Society would have serious concerns about the lawfulness of these abortions.
The Association is an ardent advocate for the decriminalisation of abortion in New Zealand. The Association believes that unborn children are not endowed with inalienable human rights, that the killing of an unborn child is not a crime and that abortion should be a health matter for a woman to choose. The Association is a vocal advocate of a “woman’s right to choose” There is no such right; a mother does not have a right to kill her own child. Nobody has a right to kill another person.
Mifegyne, RU486 is a controversial, dangerous and lethal drug. It is 98 per cent effective in killing unborn children up to 9 weeks gestation. It is also dangerous for women’s health. There have been 12 reported deaths in the United States of women resulting from the use of Mifegyne. There have also been over 1200 complications resulting from the use of this dangerous drug, many of the complications were life threatening. The long term effects on women’s health are unknown as trials have not been conducted.
The Family Planning Association claims in its media release that ‘safe and accessible abortion services are an integral part of good reproductive health.” They are not, the authentic care of vulnerable women and their unborn requires compassionate care and help that respects the life of the unborn child and protects the wellbeing and physical and mental health of the mother.
Linda Penno, the President of the Association claims that in the event that abortions are made available from the Association’s 30 branches there will not be an increase in abortions in New Zealand. We challenge this statement, there are 26 facilities licenced by the Abortion Supervisory Committee to perform abortions. If 26 facilities reported 18,382 abortions in 2007 an additional 30 abortion facilities will certainly encourage an increased number of abortions each year.
In the event that the Association is granted a licence by the Abortion Supervisory Committee we would expect that the Association will seek funding from your Ministry to meet the costs of providing chemical abortions. Our Society is totally opposed to any such funding. We are aware that your Ministry has a contract with the Association to provide certain health services; we would be opposed to this contract being enlarged to include the provision of abortions.
We commend your government for its desire to reduce the appalling abortion statistic in New Zealand, which represents the violation of the human rights of unborn children.
Our Society is also very concerned at the physical and psychological damage that is inflicted on many women following an abortion.
Our Society supports that if abortions are to be performed they should be performed in Public Hospitals to provide transparency and accountability. The provision of abortion licences to the Association would negate these objectives.
Our Society would be grateful if you would advise if your government supports or opposes the Family Planning Association providing abortions? Our Society would also be grateful if you would provide us with an assurance that your government will not provide the New Zealand Family Planning Association with funding for the provision of abortions?
Yours sincerely
Ken Orr
Secretary
